Impressions, the mind food...

Impressions, the mind food...

There are three levels of food for the human being, the first "organic material and liquids" the second "air" the third and the most important "impressions"...

One can survive perhaps 30 days without organic solids, 3 days give or take without water, 3 minutes give or take without air, 3 seconds give or take without impressions.

Impressions come in all shapes, sounds, smells, tastes, and sensations. They are actually what operates the human senses, moving between negative and positive poles. They produce in turn, the highest forms of hydrogen for this chemical lab we live in.
Even though the impressions themselves can be down right nasty, they are not the problem, only a symptom. The receptor is the problem, what we call human intellect and emotion the interpretors of the impressions, are the problem.

This has to do with one's individual level of conscious awareness. Normally and sad to say predominantly, we react to impressions in a very mechanical way. The impression rings up associations and that is normally as far as we go. We give over control to the mechanical associations, which can later develop into attitudinal behaviour, good or bad.

Surprisingly, the majority of impressions we take in, develop into negative emotions, thoughts and later actions. Even a positive impression, can lead to negative critical behaviour, of which we then justify, citing many supposed good reasons. We do not see this happening because we are controlled by the external influence that dictates the reaction. We are then used for something other than our own purposes, by something other than our own true selves.

A form of "zombie-essence" like hypnosis, can best be used to describe it. We have a brief moment of consciousness, then travel away in our thoughts and feelings to some other place or problem. This is a miss use of psychic energy, resulting in a missed chance to gain better control over the body machine and in turn, greater self awareness.

We think we are in control all of the time, but this is a clever illusion to guide us away from actually having control.
Think of a pleasure that you have been anticipating since early in the day. Perhaps it is looking forward to tasting those fresh apples you picked the day before, or even better, that warm soothing end of the day shower to wash off the stress of the day. They are in themselves a form of distraction, that keep you away in a brief or longer way from the task at hand. We all experience these moments, yet deny them if asked. They are considered personal in nature, fantasies of a sort, no matter what type or kind.

The moment arrives when we can finally satisfy these desirable, pleasurable daydreams, when a curious event happens...

We are plunging in with gusto and anticipation when suddenly, another external or internal distraction bursts forth, taking us away to other places, thoughts and feelings which are contrary to where we wanted to be.

This happens to everyone regardless if we admit it or not, if you look at it objectively, it can only be defined as a loss of control. We rarely live in the moment, we are more like rudderless boats without a captain or crew. We are at the mercy of the waves and currents of life (impressions), moving randomly at times, but most often in a circle.

Gurdjieff explained this behaviour to a student one time, in a brief moment of time, with one phrase, "You think, "I" only look". At the time the two were silently observing a beautiful flower garden, when the student began to describe all the botanical species, probably with the hope of impressing his esteemed teacher, which of course took him away from the actual moment.

The fakir controls thoughts by movement, the monk by prayer, and the yogi by meditation. The objective of all three, is to be in the moment by using one centre... Imagine if we could be in the moment, using all centres respectively...
